Further two charged after fatal crash – Mid North Coast

Further charges laid over a fatal crash near Grafton in 2021.

Emergency services were called to Swan Creek, near Grafton, about 6pm on Friday 6 August 2021, following reports a Mazda Bravo had been damaged while travelling on Big River Way.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District attended and found a 50m roll of fencing had landed on the bonnet, impacting heavily with the windscreen.

The Mazda driver, a 35-year-old man, was treated at the scene by paramedics and airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

The man died in hospital on Sunday 8 August 2021.

The two passengers of the vehicle, an eight-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, were not injured.

A crime scene which was later examined by specialist police from the Far North Coast Crash Investigation Unit (CIU).

Following inquiries, two men, aged 45 and 67, were charged with matters dealt with by the courts.

Following further inquiries, two men – aged 31 and 62 – were each issued court attendance notices charged with four counts of fail to ensure safety of transport activities, manslaughter, and director unsafely loaded vehicle death/injury/damage occurs.

Police will allege in court that the men loaded the trailer with steel products including three pallets of coil fencing wire prior to the crash.

They will appear before Grafton Local Court on Monday 9 October 2023.
