Galiwinku families benefit from new homes

NT Government

New homes in Galiwinku on Elcho Island are making a positive impact on residents in the community, with seven homes recently handed over.

One of the families to receive keys was Galiwinku mum Naomi Campbell. The past 12 months has been challenging for Ms Campbell, who lost her husband last year. Now, she has a place to call home.

Already, 18 new homes have been built and 9 existing homes have had extensions added to help combat overcrowding.

Many more families are set to receive new and upgraded homes. In total, 70 new builds are under construction.

These works are jointly funded by the Territory Labor Government and Australian Government through the $2.1 billion Remote Housing Investment Package.

Since 2016, a record 2882 homes have been built or upgraded, while a further 795 homes are underway across the Territory under all remote housing programs.

Housing designs and allocations are chosen by the community, through the local decision-making process.

Attributable to Acting Minister for Housing and Homelands Ngaree Ah Kit:

“Our remote communities are hives of building activity. It’s great to see Galiwinku families moving into their homes and excited about the next chapter of their lives.

“We know a secure home leads to better health, education and employment outcomes and a stronger community overall.

“All Territorians deserve access to safe, secure and affordable housing and we will continue to strengthen and improve our housing stock across the Territory.”

Attributable to Member for Arafura, Manuel Brown:

“We will continue to see new homes in our Arafura electorate rolled out over the coming years under Our Community. Our Future. Our Homes.

“Housing for our mob is one of key the reasons I put my hand up to represent my community as the Member for Arafura in a Territory Labor Government.

“Improving living conditions and reducing overcrowding in remote communities is a priority I work hard for every day.”
