Game on for our women in sport

Council wants to increase the participation of women in sport, both on and off the field.

Logan City Council is working to close the gender gap in sport through a new Game on for Women initiative.

The initiative aims to increase female (14 years and older) participation in sport, on and off the field.

Community Services Director Katie Barton-Harvey said Council was committed to supporting women in sport as players, coaches, officials and leaders.

“It sometimes can be more difficult for women to start playing and stay involved in sport,” Ms Barton-Harvey said.

The initiative delivers on Council’s Active Logan Strategy.

It specifically addresses the areas of Active Spaces – facilities suitable and safe for women; Active People – women who are active and celebrated; and, Active Organisations – empowering sports clubs to support women.

Registrations are now open for a Women’s Leadership Masterclass on Friday, October 25.

Developed by Women Sport Australia, the masterclass will be delivered by Carol Fox, a former lifesaver, swimmer and water polo player.

Ms Fox achieved her Master’s degree with a thesis entitled Women’s Perceived Barriers to Elite Coaching Position in Australian Sport and has since authored a book entitled Confident Communication for Leaders.

The free class runs from 9.30am to 3.30pm at Council’s Wembley Rd offices.

Registrations close on Monday, September 30.

Ms Barton Harvey said the masterclass would suit athletes, coaches, officials, club volunteers and committee members.

“Women can learn how to effectively engage and influence their audience whether they are in the committee room or on the sports field,” she said.

Ms Barton-Harvey said Logan residents could also apply for one of three Game on for Women bursaries.

The $5000 bursaries will support university studies for successful recipients.

Applications open on Tuesday, October 1 and close on Friday, December 6. Women of all ages are encouraged to apply.
