Georges River Clean Up Australia Success

Georges River Council

Clean Up Australia Day in the Georges River area was a success with great numbers of volunteers at eight sites across the Local Government Area.

On Sunday 5 March, Georges River Council supported volunteers by supplying equipment and removing the many bags of litter that weighed in at 0.84 tonnes. Community litter clean-ups were held at the following sites:

  • Lugarno Progress Association at Evatt Park, Lugarno
  • Oatley Flora and Fauna Conservation Society and Scout Group 9 at Poulton Park, South Hurstville
  • Advance Diversity Services at Hogben Park, Kogarah
  • Lugarno Progress Association at Murdock Crescent, Lugarno
  • Kogarah Bay Progress Association Inc. at Claydon Reserve, Sans Souci
  • IAAL Charitable Association at Oatley Pleasure Grounds, Oatley
  • Georges River Association with plot-holders and visitors at Hurstville Community Gardens
  • Ocean Watch at Georges River, Dover Park.

There were some interesting litter items collected including a drone, a jet ski seat, and some vandalised council signs. A bonus for two participants was finding money, including a $100 note! More expected items included lots of surgical face masks, bottles, tennis and soccer balls, trolleys, tyres, paint cans and soft plastic bags.

Georges River Council Mayor Nick Katris expressed his gratitude to everyone who came together to achieve positive outcomes for the community and environment.

“I am so pleased that Council and our residents worked so hard for Clean Up Australia Day. Congratulations for efforts over all the sites, and I’m sure you feel a strong sense of community as you got together to do something powerful and positive for our local environment,” said the Mayor.
