Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment: new milestones reached

  • The schematic design of the $73.3 million Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment has been finalised
  • Design of the new façade draws inspiration from local culture, industry and geography thanks to community input
  • Tender for forward works package released
  • The McGowan Government’s $73.3 million Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment has reached two significant milestones with the release of the forward works tender as well as the finalisation of the schematic design.

The overall layout of the redevelopment has now been approved and the project moves to the next phase where finer details are confirmed, including fittings and equipment.

Local consumers, staff at the hospital and representatives from local organisations have played a part in the design of the new facility through their involvement in a community reference group.

The exterior of the facility is set to incorporate elements that represent regionally significant landmarks and industries, including the Abrolhos Islands and local boat building and brick manufacturing.

Public art and other spaces within the redevelopment will also recognise the local Aboriginal culture and regional agriculture.

A tender for builders to register interest in undertaking the forward works package, including expansion of the car park and engineering works, has now also been released.

The redevelopment of the Geraldton Health Campus includes an expanded emergency department; a new intensive care unit co-located with a redeveloped high dependency unit and a new integrated mental health service, including an acute psychiatric unit and a mental health short stay unit.

The upgrades are part of a $1.5 billion infrastructure modernisation program being delivered by the WA Country Health Service to improve health services across regional Western Australia.

As stated by Health and Mental Health Minister Roger Cook:

“Following my visit to the Geraldton Health Campus last month, I’m now pleased to confirm schematic design has been finalised and the tender for the forward works package has been released.

“This means we are a step closer towards fulfilling this Government’s commitment to boost health services for the Mid-West region and expand the Geraldton Health Campus.

“This redevelopment demonstrates our commitment to strengthening quality healthcare for the Mid-West community and reinforces this McGowan Government’s pledge to put patients first.

“I’m particularly pleased to see the WA Country Health Service has ensured the new facility includes cultural recognition of the traditional land owners and that the local community has helped to shape the design.

“Geraldton Health Campus’ redevelopment will be rolled out in phases with the full project expected to be completed and all new areas of the facility operational in 2023.”

As stated by Agricultural Region MLC Darren West:

“After many years of dashed promises and waiting, the Geraldton Regional Hospital is finally being upgraded.

“We promised this upgrade at the last election and the McGowan Government is once again delivering for the people of Geraldton and the Mid-West.

“I acknowledge the great work of the Minister and the team at WA Country Health Mid West for their efforts to get this project to this point so quickly.

“I encourage local business to tender for these works.”
