Get set to make a reel catch in 2020

Fishers in the Rockhampton Region can look forward to casting a line from three new land based fishing platforms currently under construction in Park Avenue, Koongal, and Depot Hill.

The platforms – along with a land based fishing area planned for the Ski Gardens in Wandal – were made possible through $800,000 in funding from Round 3 of the Works for Queensland program.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the platforms would be a great drawcard for residents and visitors.

“Through the Palaszczuk Government’s Works for Queensland program, councils are able to select the projects they feel are very important to their community, and I want to applaud Rockhampton Regional Council for putting forward this project,” he said.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said that construction of the platforms supported jobs and contributed to the region’s growing reputation as a stellar spot for fishing tourism.

“And, of course, these areas will become incredibly valuable to the people in the region who will cast their lines from these spots for years to come,” he said.

Infrastructure Committee Chair Councillor Tony Williams said the platforms are an important aspect of Council’s broader Recreational Fishing Development Strategy.

“We went through extensive public consultation during the process of developing our strategy, and one clear priority for the community was the creation of designated fishing spots across the region,” said Cr Williams.

“The community have been incredible advocates for these locations in particular, which are already well-loved fishing spots.

“The platforms will formalise the existing fishing areas, and ensure the banks are protected from erosion.

“Under our strategy we are looking at establishing more locations in the future, so keep an ear out for more announcements.

“I know there are many people who are looking forward to casting a line from these areas, and I want to thank the State Government for helping make it possible.

“Yet again, the Works for Queensland Program is helping us deliver a project that will make a difference to people in our region.”

The three platforms are located at:

  • Queens Park in Park Avenue
  • Donovan Park in Koongal
  • At the end of Lucius/Wharf Street in Depot Hill

The land based fishing area planned for the Ski Gardens in Wandal is set to be delivered in 2020.
