Getting older – a reason to celebrate

Seniors from across the Swan Hill municipality have the opportunity to participate in a variety of events being held this senior’s week.

Victorian senior’s week commences on Monday, 7 October and aims to celebrate Victorians aged 60+ who make a valuable contribution to our society.

There will be more than 2,500 free or low-cost events being run across the state and free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders will run from Sunday 6 October to Sunday 13 October.

Swan Hill Rural City Council has put together an impressive schedule of events.

Council social support leader Carolyn Harrop said she looks forward to Seniors Week every year.

“It is a really fun way to celebrate the valuable contribution that older people make to our community,” she said.

Activities being held throughout the week include entertainment by Chooka Williams, interesting tours and a headline concert performance by the Baby Boomers Duo.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘get social’ and it is encouraging people to get out and about within their local community and beyond.

“The emphasis is to maintain socialisation in our senior aged people we want to encourage people to get out and continue to do the things that they love,” Ms Harrop said.

She said that senior’s week draws people in from all over the region and beyond.

“It brings everyone together and is such a great opportunity to catch up with friends. We even get people who come from Melbourne.”
