Girls and women sports high on agenda at female football festival

The Brimbank Female Football Festival will return to Keilor Park on Saturday 28 March 2020 for a full day of soccer fun aimed at girls and women.

Now in its third year, the one-day festival showcases the skills of females across Brimbank and encourages the community to hone their soccer skills, be active and involved in sports.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the annual festival was a great way to promote and encourage participation of girls and women in sport and recreation around Brimbank.

‘The Brimbank Female Football Festival is a great day out for the entire family.

‘It doesn’t matter if you play soccer or have never kicked a soccer ball in your life, this festival has something for everyone.

‘Come along on the day to watch the amazing skills on the pitch in the women’s tournament and register for any of the free soccer programs on offer.

‘There will be family entertainment including face painting and fun activities with Western United FC on the day.’

Cr Papafotiou said the 2020 Brimbank Female Football Festival would mark the official launch of Brimbank’s girls and women in sport and recreation advocacy campaign.

‘As the Mayor, I want to encourage more girls and women to take part in sport and recreation.

‘Through our Transforming Brimbank Sport and Recreation Agenda Council has been working to establish better sporting options for girls and women, to support grass-roots sport and ensure future generations have access to the facilities they need to live active and healthy lives.

‘Over the coming months our priorities will be to campaign for Brimbank to be the future ‘Home of the Matildas’ at Sydenham Park, to continue to seek funding for the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub, and to seek more funding to accommodate the increased demand for girls and women’s sports facilities in Brimbank,’ Cr Papafotiou said.
