Campaspe Shire Council is inviting the community to attend a morning tea on Tuesday, 7 May in support of International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), 5 – 11 May.
Mayor Cr Adrian Weston said the event aims to improve awareness of the importance of composting.
“Composting is extremely valuable as it adds important nutrients to the soil, improving quality and fertility for farmers and home gardeners alike,” Cr Weston said.
The event will see guest speakers from Biomix and Kennaugh’s Garden Centre talk about the natural process of composting and how composting improves soil health for more sustainable farming and communities.
“Product samples will be provided on the day along with valuable resources to promote compost use, products and increase knowledge,” Cr Weston said.
Council’s recent Waste in Campaspe – Know Educate Do (WickED) survey revealed pleasing results which showed 46 per cent of residents surveyed already compost or use a worm farm for disposing of food waste.
“Our community is already doing great things to avoid food waste going to landfill and we encourage the rest of the community to take measures to build healthier soils,” Cr Weston said.
From 1 July, council’s existing garden waste service is being expanded to include food waste, collected through the fortnightly kerbside collection. This combined food and garden organic waste will be turned into compost by local Stanhope business Biomix and used on gardens, parks and farms.
