With Christmas just around the corner, the ACT economy is set for a significant boost, with Canberrans urged to support local business now more than ever.
“We know there is a lot of pent-up demand after a year in which people haven’t been able to celebrate or spend as they usually would,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr.
“I have no doubt we are going to see strong economic stimulus in the next few weeks, and I am sure businesses across Canberra are ready to make the most of this consumer demand over the festive period.”
Minister for Business and Better Regulation Tara Cheyne urged people to shop local and support Canberra businesses wherever possible when buying gifts for loved ones.
“Our region offers a range of unique locally made products and experiences both online and instore,” said Minister Cheyne.
“You can support the local art scene by shopping for a one-of-a-kind gift made right here in Canberra. artsACT has compiled a webpage that will help you find something special for everyone on your list, no matter their age or interest. This makes shopping easy from a local art gallery or shop, or directly from the artist themselves.
“If you are the kind of person who likes making their own gift, you can attend a workshop and learn how to make something yourself. Tharwa Valley Forge offers classes where you can create sculptures, handmade knives or work with leather. The Canberra Glasswork’s creative ‘make your own’ workshops are on hold right now, but you can purchase a high-quality handmade glass objects in their beautiful, newly refurbished, retail space.
“Memberships to our galleries and museums, or subscriptions to our local theatres not only make great gifts that keep on giving throughout the coming year but also keep’s Canberra’s cultural sector thriving and supports local artists and performers.
“Every family has that one person who is hard to buy for, but fortunately many Canberra businesses offer gift voucher for everything from spa treatments to martial arts classes.
“Canberra is well known for its high number of excellent restaurants. For the foodies in your circle, you might consider purchasing dinner or picnic vouchers from one of our many incredible restaurants and pair them with a locally produced gin, wine or beer.
“Why not shop for homeware, locally made furniture or handmade toys, closer to home at some of the smaller suburban gift shops across Canberra that offer something unique and different. The Canberra and Region Visitors Centre also offers a range of locally made products, especially good for friends and relatives interstate,” Minister Cheyne said.
