Give up your bed for a youth in need

Tonight, more than 116,000 Australians are experiencing homelessness including approximately 220 young people from across the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region according to the 2016 Census.

To help raise awareness about this issue, the Shire and Fusion Mornington Peninsula encourages all of us to give up our beds for a night, sleep in our cars, pitch a tent in our yards or sleep on our couches for a night.

Sleep In Your Car is an annual event leading up to Homelessness Week that seeks to educate the community and raise much needed funding for young people at risk of or who are experiencing homelessness on the Peninsula.

This year registration allows you full access to Fusion’s online event, including interactive experiences, live panels presenting local youth services, tours of their accommodation facility, guest speakers as well as live performing artists.

In previous years, the event has been held at Mornington Park where the local community have come together to sleep in their car for one night.

This year’s focus is “Together there’s life” which reminds us that within our community we all have a role to play in supporting one another.

Mornington Peninsula Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said, “Council are no stranger to rallying support for homelessness on the Peninsula”.

“Just last month we asked State Government to partner with us to support the growing number of homeless people on the Peninsula,” said Cr Hearn.

“For so many people, homelessness is just a statistic, some numbers on a bit of paper. But for those who are at risk or who are already suffering from homelessness, this is very real.

It’s important we hear and understand their stories. We have so much to learn and it’s so vital, especially in the colder months and during this pandemic, that we fight for those who are doing it tough without a place to stay safe and warm,” concluded Cr Hearn.

Together we will help provide accommodation, support, opportunity and hope for young people experiencing homelessness in our community.
