Glasgow sabotaged by Scott Morrison

The Australian Greens MPs

With the final Glasgow pact resolving that coal and gas were on the way out but the world was not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees because 2030 pledges were too weak, the summit will be remembered as one that ScoMo helped sabotage.

But it will also heap pressure on Liberal and Labor next year to lift 2030 targets, and phase out coal and gas.

As stated by Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP:

“Glasgow was the summit ScoMo helped sabotage, but he doesn’t get off scot free.

“Australia is widely regarded as the villain of the summit.

“Instead of joining with the US and UK who wanted urgent action, Scott Morrison sided with Saudi Arabia and Russia to push the problem into the future.

“Scott Morrison intervened to stop urgent action and 1.5 degrees is now almost out of reach, but the end of coal and gas is in sight and Australia is under pressure to lift 2030 targets next year and end coal and gas.

“An election is looming. Next year will be a climate fight, but with Labor wanting more coal and gas too, the only way to get climate action is to put the Greens in balance of power.

“Countries like Australia are now under huge pressure to lift 2030 targets next year, and the heat is on Liberal and Labor to have science-based 2030 targets that keep the Paris Agreement 1.5 degree goal alive.

“The independent Climate Targets Panel has determined that Australia needs to cut climate pollution 74% on 2005 levels by 2030 to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees.

“In balance of power, the Greens will kick the Liberals out and push the next government for no more coal and gas and 2030 targets of 75% to keep the Paris goal of 1.5 degrees in reach.”
