Police have charged two men following an alleged armed burglary at Surfers Paradise this morning, following which two men jumped into the Nerang River to avoid arrest.
It’s alleged around 9.00am, two men armed with nunchucks attended a waterfront residence on Sunrise Boulevard and forced entry through a locked gate, before banging on the front door making demands.
The occupants – a 37-year-old man, his wife and child – escaped the residence and contacted police, before the pair kicked in the front door.
Police attended the residence where they located two men standing on the complex’s rear pontoon.
It will be alleged that upon officers attempting to arrest the men, they jumped into the Nerang River and swam to the centre.
Police set up four cordons between Surfers Paradise, Chevron Island and Bundall to monitor the men while they instructed them to return to shore.
The men allegedly refused, and police commandeered a nearby barge, which was used to retrieve the men from the water.
Once onshore, a 33-year-old man suffered a medical episode and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition, before being later released.
A 33-year-old Ironbark man has now been charged with one count each of enter dwelling with intent, going armed to cause fear and obstructing police.
A 25-year-old Bilinga man has been charged with one count each of enter dwelling with intent, going armed to cause fear, possessing a restricted item, obstructing police and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
Both are scheduled to appear at the Southport Magistrates Court (tomorrow) June 8.
