Government’s approval of duck shooting season ignores community pleas

Australian Greens

The Andrews Government has yet again decided to green light the annual slaughter of native waterbirds in Victoria, despite months of protest by communities and the Greens.

This summer saw more than a billion animals decimated by the tragic bushfires, prompting renewed calls for the protection of wildlife across the state.

However, these calls seem to have been ignored by the Government, who will once again permit Victorians to shoot ducks for recreation.

Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam, said it was time for Victoria to follow the leads of NSW, Queensland and Western Australia, where duck shooting has been banned for decades.

As stated by Leader of the Victorian Greens, Samantha Ratnam MLC:

“It’s incredibly disappointing that the Andrews Government has ignored the pleas of Victorians across the state to ban duck shooting in the wake of the terrible bushfires.

“Our native ducks are already under extreme pressure from climate change, catastrophic fires and drought but this seems to have been ignored.

“Now more than ever the barbaric slaughter of our native animals must end.”
