Grand Parade cancelled due to wet weather

Tonight’s Cairns Festival Grand Parade has been cancelled due to the current and forecast wet weather.

“We made this decision as early as possible as many of the parade participants would be getting prepared, and we are also conscious that this event attracts people from across the city,” Council CEO Mica Martin said.

“Due to the weather, valuable time has been lost in set up and preparation. Many of the floats also have powered equipment, making their use in wet weather a concern.

“We understand that this is an important event on the Cairns events calendar, but the safety of the community is always Council’s first priority.

“Council apologises for any inconvenience.”

All other events scheduled for today will proceed as planned, except for Gulgi-barra by Miriki Performing Arts event which was postponed this morning.

The dining precinct will be open as usual, and the remaining program of events will proceed as planned, including:

  • Fireworks
  • Esplanade Main Stage Music (starting at 1pm, with the inclusion of Tessa Devine and headlined this evening by the incredible Electrik Lemonade)
  • The Cairns Airport aerobatic aircraft display
  • City Lights at City Library
  • Reef Lights: Where the Rainforest Meets The Reef
  • String Symphony (Lagoon Plaza)
  • Dead Puppet Society’s Flamingos, roving through the dining precinct along the Esplanade
  • Higher Faster Louder (JUTE Theatre)
  • The Reef Eye (Esplanade)
  • How We Relate – Yalanji Exhibition (Court House Gallery)
  • Thomas Chen – An Extension of Myself (Court House Gallery)
