One hundred years of Soroptimist International will be celebrated by the Townsville Breakwater chapter with a grant awarded by Townsville City Council this week.
With a focus on issues affecting women in the region and the prevention of family and domestic violence, the grant will support a family fun afternoon held in conjunction with local organisations.
It will also support a candlelight walk to raise awareness on family issues, a panel discussion on women in the workforce, and the launch of the Safe Nights Program which will help give displaced women a safe place to sleep.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said Council was proud to support the event.
“The Soroptimist International clubs in North Queensland do a lot of great work helping people experiencing inequality, as well as working to address the causes of these inequalities. This is something to celebrate, as this is important work to help some of the most vulnerable members of our society,” Cr Greaney said.
“Doing this for even one year would be admirable, but this incredible international organisation has been doing this work for 100 years, and that is worthy of recognition.
“Soroptimist International Townsville Breakwater is planning a family fun day, as well as a Candlelight Twilight Walk to help promote women’s safety in our community, to mark its centenary.
“They will also be launching their Safe Nights Program which aims to provide vulnerable women in Townsville with a safe place to sleep.”
Cr Greaney said there were hundreds of visitors expected to attend the events.
“Soroptimist International Townsville Breakwater estimates that there will be up to 50 participants, 2000 attendees and more than 50 volunteering opportunities during the centenary celebrations,” she said.
