With play on pause due to Coronavirus, AllStars coordinator Lucy Weddell is using funds from Bayside City Council’s Inclusive Partnership Grant to distribute sports equipment and ensure no one misses out.
Each participant has received a home exercise kit with suggested activities to help them stay physically active and engaged. “We delivered the packs to participant’s front doors. Everyone was really appreciative and said it was a kind and creative way to stay connected,” says Lucy.
The exercise packs are tailored to participants’ needs and include a skipping rope, brightly coloured and textured balls, and a small bean bag. “They’re enjoying the feel of the mini bean bag on their head as they practice standing tall,” says Lucy. The packs also include a three-week challenge to help participants build specific skills.
Community support
Parents have also been missing hanging out on the sideline – a time when they can share stories and support each other. The Council grant has helped AllStars develop marketing materials, including a closed Facebook group which Lucy says has been very popular with parents sharing photos of the home-based exercise activities.

AllStars began in 2018 to help children living with a disability in Bayside build sporting skills and confidence. The volunteer-led program is hosted by Firbank Grammar and run throughout the year by experienced coaches, volunteers, and student mentors. AllStars is open to anyone aged between 7 and 14 years with learning needs or disabilities.
