Grants now available for key disability celebrations across Qld

The Palaszczuk Government is offering a share of $150,000 to the organisers of events and activities across the state that recognise the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke today (4 July) announced that applications for the 2019 Disability Community Event grants program were now open.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to creating equitable, accessible and inclusive communities for everyone, including the one in five Queenslanders that live with disability,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The Disability Community Event grants program provides a contribution towards events or activities held during Disability Action Week, from 15 and 22 September 2019, or on the International Day of People with Disability on 3 December 2019.

“A wide range of organisations and community groups are eligible to apply for these grants of up to $5000.

“This includes those across the sport and recreation, arts and culture, education and employment, housing, health and transport sectors who want to be part of these important disability celebrations.”

Mrs O’Rourke said Disability Action Week was held annually to raise awareness of how Queenslanders can play their own role in creating an all abilities Queensland.

“We’ve seen some wonderful Disability Action Week events and activities in previous years, such as forums, BBQs and inclusive sport try-out days,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what this year’s celebration brings to communities across the state.

“I’m particularly interested in seeing events that support young people with disability to better access their community and employment opportunities.”

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations-sanctioned day to help promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

This year, its theme is: “The future is accessible”.

Disability Community Event grant applications close at midday on Monday 29 July 2019.
