Elected local government officials and key industry representatives from across the Great South Coast converged on Portland today (February 26) for a forum to discuss priorities for the region.
Glenelg Shire Council hosted the meeting, the first of the year for the Great South Coast alliance of Councils.
Chair of the Great South Coast Group Anita Rank said the meeting allowed delegates to develop a greater understanding of Portland’s role in the Great South Coast.
“It’s been fantastic to host our local leaders in Portland today to discuss what lies ahead for the region and what issues and opportunities the Great South Coast Group will be prioritising and pursuing through 2021 and beyond,” Cr Rank said.
“As part of the Forum, delegates were given a tour of the Port of Portland, a key driver for economic growth not only for the Glenelg Shire, but the entire region.
“The Port services our thriving agriculture, sustainable forestry and mining industries from northern and western Victoria right through to south-east South Australia, it is integral to the future success of the Great South Coast.
“Following the tour, delegates heard from key speakers including regional investment and reform specialist Luke Fraser, public policy and media consultants CPR and Rural Councils Victoria.
“We hope that the forum will help set the tone for the rest of the year, ensuring we continue to secure further investment and infrastructure for our diverse region.”
Warrnambool City Council was represented at the forum by Mayor Cr Vicki Jellie and Acting Chief Executive Officer Vikki King.
