We are once again calling on the Cooma community to do the right thing with their green waste (FOGO) bins, with last week seeing a large spike in the level of contamination in the loads being dropped off at the landfill and through kerbside collection.
Green waste delivered to Cooma Landfill is sorted manually by our hard-working waste operations workers before being transferred to the composting rows at the compost facility.
As was the case months ago when we brought this problem to the public’s attention, a small number of people in the community disposing of biohazardous medical waste, nappies and regular garbage are jeopardising this important process for the rest of us.
“It’s disappointing to see that some people are still doing the wrong thing with their green bins,” said Mayor Peter Beer, Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
“The compost facility at Cooma Landfill is a vital part of our Council’s waste strategy, reducing the amount of recoverable waste that goes into landfill, reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting the community through employment and access to low-cost, high-quality compost that’s produced locally.”
The following types of waste are OK in the FOGO bin (lime-green lid):
• Food scraps (including cooked meat and bones)
• Garden waste (including untreated wood no larger than kindling)
• Paper towel and serviettes (due to COVID-19 please place your used tissues in the red bin)
• Even greasy pizza boxes!
Council’s waste operations team members must remove any contaminants by hand, putting them at great risk when dangerous items are mixed in. Your assistance in doing the right thing is appreciated.
