Greenpatch camping ground closure

Greenpatch Campground in Gordonvale will be closed to camping from Monday 2 November until 30 April 2021 due to the increased risk of flooding.

While Greenpatch will be closed to camping, the reserve remains open for passive recreational use, such as picnics, cycling and scooter riding and exercise.

Toilet facilities will be open for day use, although the showers will be closed in line with the closure of the area for camping.

The closure has been recommended by the Local Disaster Management Committee (LDMG) based on weather pattern predictions, particularly with the expected influence of La Nina weather patterns, which will likely bring prolonged periods of heavy rain and potentially more cyclones this disaster season.

The campground is on the Mulgrave River floodplain and therefore can be inundated during the wet season.

Testing of Greenpatch Camping Flood Warning System

Council will conduct live testing of the Greenpatch flood warning system on Thursday 5 November.

The warning has been installed to ensure there is sufficient time for evacuation of the campground before floodwaters potentially start to enter the lower areas of the site.

Thursday’s test will begin with a voice activation lasting approximately 25 seconds, followed by a siren tone also lasting approximately 30 seconds.

This is a test only. Residents and visitors in the area do not need to take any action.

Family pets should be secured to ensure they do not escape their yard during the test.
