Griffith Mayor urges others to give blood to save lives

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran has rolled up his sleeves to give a life-saving blood donation and is urging locals to do the same.

More than 10 of Riverina’s local government organisations have joined forces in a blood drive that hopes to help save the lives of more than 15,000 Australians.

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood’s Local Government Blood Drive sees employees, mayors, councillors, and community members rally together to donate blood and plasma in donor centres across the country.

Lifeblood is hoping more than 150 donations will be made in the Riverina throughout the three-month drive before it wraps up on September 30 2023.

Councillor Curran made a donation at the Griffith Mobile Donor Centre last week. He is urging residents to make a donation the next time the mobile van is in Griffith from Tuesday 3 October to Thursday 5 October 2023.

“Last year Griffith City Council donors contributed more than 20 donations of blood and plasma to the blood drive, saving up to 60 lives,” Councillor Curran said.

“We hope to save even more lives this year. It takes all of us and every drop counts.

“With 1 in 3 people needing blood in their lifetime, you never know when it might be a family member, a neighbour or someone from your community who needs it. All it takes to make a donation is an hour of your time.”

Lifeblood spokesperson Mitchell Bryce said new blood donors were always needed.

“We always need new donors to expand our donor panel to help as many people as possible, you don’t need to know your blood type, we’ll let you know as a part of donating; if you’re well enough to workout you’re likely well enough to donate and a blood donation is needed every 18 seconds, come and see us when we next visit. Mitchell Bryce said.

“Whether you work for a local government organisation, volunteer for one, or live within a local government area, there’s three Australians out there that will benefit from your blood donation, be the lifeblood of your community.”
