Griffith Youth given helping hand

Griffith City Council will lend a helping hand to local at risk and vulnerable youth, with 80 care packages to be distributed across the Griffith Local Government Area.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi said the packs were created by Council staff with thanks to $2,500 from unsubscribed funding from the Community Grants budget.

“This is the second year Council has been able to provide these care packages with funding from the Community Grants budget,” said Councillor Dal Broi.

“Last year, Senior Constable Alex Davies, the School Liaison Officer raised concerns about disengaged youth across the City, with Council voting to use the funds to provide care packages filled with essential products to assist our young people.

“Many people take basic items for granted, being able to shower, wash your hair or even have enough to eat – these packages will assist those who don’t have the same access to basics as many of us,” he added.

Each care package contains personal hygiene products including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, tooth brush, toothpaste, moisturiser, pads, tampons, comb, hairbrush, antiseptic wipes, and toilet paper, as well as a towel, basic food items, and face masks.

Council was supported by Kmart Griffith, and Griffith Foodworks through generous discounts, allowing for additional products to be purchased.

Manager Griffith Kmart, Peter West said he was pleased to be able to support such an important cause.

“This is a really important project for Griffith and I am happy that Kmart was able to provide support,” said Mr West.

“I think it is important that we give back to the community in whatever way we can and this is a really worthwhile cause.”

Griffith Foodworks Manager, Ross Catanzariti said he was more than happy to assist for the second year.

“We know there are many people suffering hardship across our community and we would like to help out and ease that pressure,” he said.

Packages will be distributed in the coming weeks through Griffith PCYC, headspace Griffith, Linking Communities Network, Mission Australia and School Welfare Teachers.

The Youth Care Packages Project is a combined community effort with advice sought from Griffith Youth Interagency.
