The Finocchiaro CLP Government is strengthening community-led support for Territory families through a growing network of Child and Family Centres, with 11 now operating across the Territory.
Funding agreements are now in place for two new Child and Family Centres in Borroloola and Alparra.
Child and Family Centres provide a safe, welcoming ‘front door’ for families, designed and delivered by Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations in partnership with local communities.
As we mark International Day of Play, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is highlighting the growing network of Child and Family Centres supporting families to stay strong, connected and well in communities across the Territory.
Play helps children build relationships, overcome trauma and problem-solve, developing the cognitive, physical, creative, social and emotional skills they need to thrive.
Child and Family Centres support children and families to engage in play-based learning, with funding agreements now in place for two new centres in Borroloola and Alparra, delivered by Gulf Youth and Community Services and Urapuntja Aboriginal Corporation.
Minister for Children and Families, Robyn Cahill, said that International Day of Play is a chance to celebrate children, families and fun, and to recognise how important it is that parents and families have access to the right support, at the right time, in ways that work for them.
“Child and Family Centres are designed by communities, for communities. They provide welcoming, culturally safe places where families can get support early and build on their strengths.
“The establishment of new centres in Borroloola and Alparra shows what’s possible when governments work in partnership with Aboriginal organisations and local leaders.”
Centres are already making a difference across the Territory – from Darrandirra in Darwin’s northern suburbs supporting parents to rebuild stability, to Kalkarindji’s Ngaliwany Purrp’ku Centre teaching practical cooking and family safety skills, and Wurrumiyanga’s Pumulayu Centre strengthening food security and cultural connection through its Feed Our Families initiative.
The expansion reflects a shared commitment between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments to invest in family wellbeing and community-led solutions.
