Half price tyre offer during September

Our war on waste is targeting tyres this month with a 50% discount on the gate fee for selected tyres. The half-price offer will include motor cycle, car and four-wheel-drive tyres, as well as tyres with rims.

Residents will be able to recycle up to five passenger tyres for $5 each up to 30 September. There is normally a $10 fee per tyre, while tyres with rims normally attract an $11 fee. Commercial operators are not eligible for the offer.Conditions apply.

Tyres can be dropped off at the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre and Drysdale Resource Recovery Centre.

The tyres will then be transported to specialist tyre recycling business, Tyrecycle in Melbourne.

Widely considered an industry leader, Tyrecycle has a nationwide network of collection and processing capabilities. This includes the largest tyre crumbing plant at its head office in Somerton in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

The plant shreds truck tyres into rubber crumb which is used on soft-fall surfaces, such as children’s playgrounds. Recycled rubber is also used under synthetic grass for softness on sporting grounds.

Scrap car tyres are shredded and exported for use as a tyre-derived fuel, a replacement for fossil fuels in industry. Tyres with metal rims are separated and the metal sent for recycling.

We collected a total 4,734 tyres for recycling during the 2018-2019 financial year.

Used vehicle tyres can be a major environmental problem if they are not disposed of correctly.

Recycling tyres reduces landfill, conserves resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
