City of Darwin’s free annual hard rubbish clean-up starts next week, with suburbs allocated across two pickup Zones. Zone 1 will commence pickup on Monday 31 August and Zone 2 on Monday 21 September.
For the first time teams will move through each suburb street by street in convoys, collecting all items at once and leaving verges clear of all rubbish.
In the lead up to the cyclone season the hard rubbish collection is an opportunity for residents across Darwin to place unwanted items the verges in front of their homes for collection. Separated items including electrical, whitegoods, timber, scrap metal and e-waste are all accepted in the clean-up.
Green waste is NOT part of the clean-up, nor are liquids, paint, glass, tyres or car parts.
Acting Lord Mayor Mick Palmer has encouraged residents to take advantage of the free service.
“This is a terrific service offered to Darwin residents by City of Darwin and I encourage households to get rid of any unwanted items.”
“Many items put out for collection can be reused or recycled and these will be taken directly to the Helping People Achieve (HPA) Recycle Shop at Shoal Bay.”
“One person’s trash really is another’s treasure and these items will be cleaned up and sold at very reasonable prices, with these funds providing opportunities for people with disabilities to undertake various activities and learn different skills.”
“It is especially important to have similar items separated so they can be easily collected.”
“Once the convoys have visited a street they are unable to retrace their path so I encourage residents to have their hard rubbish out the day before collection starts.” Acting Lord Mayor Palmer concluded.
Zone 1 – Items out by Sunday 30 August – in Alawa, Anula, Brinkin, Casuarina, Jingili, Karama, Leanyer, Lyons, Malak, Marrara, Moil, Muirhead, Nakara, Tiwi, Wagaman, Wanguri and Wulagi.
Zone 2 – Items out by Sunday 20 September – Bayview, Coconut Grove, Darwin City, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Ludmilla, Millner, Nightcliff, Parap, Rapid Creek, Stuart Park, The Gardens, The Narrows and Woolner.
