HAVE YOUR SAY ON A PLACE NAME IN CLARENCE VALLEY LGA

NSW Department of Customer Service

The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Clarence Valley Council to name a reserve in the suburb of South Grafton as Elsie Crisp Memorial Park.

The reserve is located at 16/74-82 Tyson Street, South Grafton, Clarence Valley Local Government Area.

The name would commemorate local figure Elsie Crisp (1895 -1968) in recognition of her service to the Grafton community, her church and numerous other organisations.

Elsie Crisp was the mayor of South Grafton for several terms between 1939 and 1968 as well as a lifetime member of the Grafton Jacaranda Festival. The name Elsie Crisp Park for the corner of Armidale Street and Jubilee Avenue will be discontinued due to the construction of a carpark to service the Boyd-Nattress Complex (South Grafton Pool).

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name with suggestions for alternative names not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed, and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website. Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

Submissions can be made from 7 June until 7 July 2023.

Quotes to be attributed to Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood:

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community.”

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”
