Have your say on a place name in Shellharbour LGA

NSW Department of Customer Service

The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Shellharbour City Council to name a reserve in the locality of Shell Cove as Mainsail Park.

The reserve is positioned next to Mainsail Avenue and the proposed name was selected to assist in identifying its location.

The suggested name for the reserve has a nautical focus to complement Shell Cove which is a coastal town. A mainsail is a sail rigged on the main mast of a sailing vessel.

GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name. Suggestions for alternative names is not being sought at this time.

Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website.

Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.

The closing date for submissions is 12 May 2024.

Quotes to be attributed to NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood:

“Community consultation on the proposed names is an important step to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback and ensures that each voice has a chance to contribute.”

“Place names reflect the relationship between people and place and create a link that forms the basis for communication, location and addressing.”
