Tonight, Hayes Theatre Co announced its season for 2024. Bringing together a season of work produced by the Hayes team, as well as productions by independent partners, Hayes has sought to exemplify the company’s role within the performing arts world in Australia and beyond.

In 2024, audiences are being invited to see musical theatre differently. The Hayes is a unique space that offers incomparable musical and theatrical experiences. This record of originality is why the Hayes has gone from strength to strength in its first 10 years. Originality is certainly the watchword for the Hayes-produced shows this year – which encompass the hotly-anticipated Zombie! The Musical, the new show from musical theatre virtuoso Laura Murphy (The Lovers, The Dismissal); the Australian premiere of the subversive, hilarious and surprisingly moving Ride The Cyclone; and a co-production with Griffin, Flat Earthers: The Musical, featuring the queer electro-pop stylings of theatre-comedy provocateurs Lou Wall, Jean Tong and James Gales. Add to this a partnership with Adelaide Cabaret Festival to launch a joint cabaret commission, and Hayes’s first ever Festival of New Work – alongside a rich selection of shows from independent artists and producers both new and returning.

“When we started in our roles as Hayes’s first ever Artistic Directors, almost a year ago, we said we wanted to broaden the scope of what this incredible theatre company puts onstage – continuing to honour and re-invent the canon, while bringing in more premieres from Australian and overseas, and incorporating other works that combine the arts of music and storytelling. This collection of shows, our first full-year season as Artistic Directors, is an indication of where we hope the company is heading as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. Whether a show is 70 years old (like The Turn of the Screw), or a world premiere (like the two new mainstage musicals we’re presenting in 2024) – we want to point to the future by inviting audiences to see musical theatre differently.” Richard Carroll and Victoria Falconer, Artistic Directors of Hayes Theatre Co.

Other exciting productions for the 2024 Season include The Hello Girls, the story of a team of female telephone operators on the front line in World War One; Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tell Me On A Sunday; and the classic Little Women. For the first time ever, opera will fill the intimate Hayes space, with Benjamin Britten’s spine-chilling masterpiece The Turn of the Screw; and just in time for Christmas, audiences will be treated to Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn. Hayes will also offer a feast of cabaret shows from artists including Carlotta and Michael Griffiths, two shows in the long-running Neglected Musicals series (They’re Playing Our Song & Promises, Promises), a celebration of gender-diverse talent with Theys At The Hayes, the Sydney premiere of Melbourne institution Home Grown, musical improv from Musical Bang Bang, plus a range of other events to celebrate Hayes Theatre Co’s tenth anniversary.

Hayes Theatre Co is offering subscriptions for 2024.

“Hayes audiences have been asking for subscriptions for years. With many shows selling out early in the season, a subscription gives people the opportunity to lock in a whole year’s worth of entertainment and avoid missing out. We’re thrilled to have a wide range of exceptional productions on offer next year. Whether you like classic musicals or the hottest new shows, you’ll want to dive into 2024 at the Hayes,” said Will Harvey Executive Director of Hayes Theatre Co.

About us:

The History of Hayes Theatre Co

The doors to Hayes Theatre Co opened on 7 February 2014 with the first performance of Sweet Charity. This inaugural production went on to be nominated for 8 Helpmann Awards, winning 3 awards for Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. The show then embarked on a national tour, including acclaimed seasons at Sydney Opera House and Arts Centre Melbourne. Since the beginning, Hayes Theatre Co has established a reputation for showcasing thrilling, innovative, and ambitious musicals and cabaret. Hayes is a place where new Australian writing rubs shoulders with bold new productions of classic and contemporary international shows; where you can see barnstorming performers and musicians threaten to burst out of the theatre, then return to experience an intimate one-person show that casts a magic spell and breaks your heart.

Hayes has earned a place on the cultural map by developing, producing, and presenting the most compelling and mould-breaking music theatre in Australia. Named in honour of musical theatre luminary Nancye Hayes AM, Hayes Theatre Co captures the spirit of Off-Broadway in Australia, providing a dedicated and permanent home for small-scale musical theatre with big ambitions, and the Australian artists who will define our cultural expression for years to come. Hayes occupies a unique and vital position in the Australian music theatre ecology. Through our productions and a wide range of development activities, we provide opportunities for both emerging and established Australian artists to refine their skills, take creative risks, and advance their careers. The programming at our intimate venue incorporates musical theatre, cabaret, and any other performances that combine the arts of music and storytelling. Everything we do is in service of the beliefs that Australian musicals and artists can rival the best in the world, and that we can build an audience of Australians who feel as passionately about creativity in the art form as we do. We are committed to changing the dominant narrative: that with rare exceptions, only imported productions of musicals can be commercially successful in Australia. Productions at Hayes have been nominated for and won numerous awards at the Helpmann Awards, Sydney Theatre Awards and several other awards ceremonies in Sydney and around Australia. Since our first production, Sweet Charity, embarked on a national tour, several further productions that have begun life at Hayes have transferred to other theatres or had national tours-including Assassins, In The Heights, Blood Brothers, Heathers, Violet, Little Shop of Horrors, H.M.S Pinafore, Rent, Godspell, Dubbo Championship Wrestling, Spamalot, American Psycho, and Calamity Jane. In a short time, the company has gained national and international recognition for its unique contribution to the Australian theatre industry. As we celebrate the last 10 years and look with excitement to the future, we’d like to thank our audience members, who never fail to show enthusiasm and curiosity, to delight in new experiences, and to see musical theatre differently.
