National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), in partnership with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and UNSW Wild Desert Project, will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in Sturt National Park from Monday 14 September to Saturday 19 September, subject to suitable weather conditions.
The 46,000-hectare burn area is located in the west of Sturt National Park, west of Cameron Corner Road with sections of the burn to occur adjacent to the South Australian and Queensland borders.
The aim of the burn is to reduce the chance of wildfire impacts to the park, neighbours and to the UNSW Wild Deserts Project area by reducing ephemeral grass fuel loads and disrupting ephemeral fuel connectivity to create a mosaic burn pattern.
All trails within the burn area will be closed for the duration of the burn. This includes informal tracks and trails.
The Dunes Scenic Drive may be impacted during the burn, and notice about the closure can be found on the NPWS local alerts webpage.
Access to Cameron Corner may also be impacted, with drivers in the area urged to check the Bulloo Shire Council website for further road closures.
Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and take care if visibility is reduced by smoke.
People with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area and follow their health plan.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW.
These hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect the parks, their natural and cultural values, neighbours and communities from summer bushfires.
