National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), together with the NSW Rural Fire Service, is conducting a hazard reduction burn in Werakata National Park on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September, subject to suitable weather conditions.
The 85-hectare burn, located at the northern end of the park near Keinbah, is aimed at reducing the chance of bushfires and their impacts to the park, neighbouring properties and the community.
All tracks and trails within the burn area will be closed for the duration of the burn and will reopen once they have been assessed as safe.
The following roads will be closed, with traffic control onsite to assist local residents:
- Londons Road (Within the National Park)
- Barnard Road
- Londons Link Trail
- Londons Boundary Trail
- Second Street
- Native Dog Hill Road from Queens Road to Gibsons Loop
- First Street (North of Queens Road).
Motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and are advised to take care if visibility is reduced by smoke.
Smoke may affect the area and people with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
These hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect the parks, their natural and cultural values, neighbours and communities from summer bushfires.
