The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning two hazard reduction burns in Maroomba State Conservation Area, near Inverell, starting 13 September.
Weather permitting, the planned 450-hectare burn will be undertaken in the reserve, which will be closed to all visitors.
The burn aims to reduce naturally accumulated fuel loads to help protect nearby communities.
These hazard reduction activities will also help to protect the reserve’s biodiversity and nearby private properties by creating a mosaic of fuel-reduced zones.
Smoke will be visible along Atholwood Road, and signage will be in place.
Motorists are advised to follow all safety signage and direction from crew.
People vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.
This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
All burns around the state are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
