Heidelberg Homes Show Future Of Social Housing

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is proudly opening the doors to the future of social and affordable housing for hundreds of renters in inner Melbourne.

Minister for Housing Harriet Shing this week met with Heidelberg West’s newest renters at the Tarakan Street site – a $76.9 million redevelopment of the former 1956 Olympic Village, consisting of 130 high-quality designed social and affordable homes.

The one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes will provide much-needed housing for people on the Victorian Housing Register. The social and affordable homes feature private balconies, split system heating and cooling, car spaces and storage cages.

Renters and the wider community can also enjoy the open and green spaces, terrace garden, children’s play space, and barbeque facilities – designed to maximise community wellbeing and connection.

In addition, 5 per cent of the new homes are fully accessible and feature accessible drop-off areas, paths, lifts and car parking.

Located just 10 kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s city centre, the Tarakan Street site is nearby community services, local schools and educational institutions as well as the Bell Street Mall.

The 67 social housing dwellings will be managed by Uniting, a not-for-profit community housing agency, and the 63 affordable dwellings to be managed by the Victorian Affordable Rentals Consortium.

This site is the latest project to welcome tenants as part of the Homes Victoria affordable housing developments which offers renters modern, accessible, energy-efficient homes with capped rent and secure leases.

As part of the landmark Big Housing Build and other projects, we are investing more than $150 million and delivering more than 330 new homes in the Banyule local government area. Once complete, the Big Housing Build will deliver more than 12,000 new homes and create more than 40,000 jobs.

As stated by Minister for Housing Harriet Shing

“This high-quality redevelopment is the future of social and affordable housing and sets the standard of living that Victorians should expect from new Government-backed developments.”

“The Tarakan Street site provides a safe and secure place for hundreds of people to call home, with quality facilities and vast communal spaces to enjoy for years to come.”

As stated by Member for Ivanhoe Anthony Carbines

“We’re building more homes in every corner of the state that are modern, energy efficient and secure, including right here in West Heidelberg.”
