Helcro Solar Says Battery Installations Are Running at Seven Times Last Year’s Rate as Subsidy Structure Shifts

Key Facts:

  • The Australian federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program, launched in July 2025, reduced upfront battery installation costs by approximately 30%, resulting in over 266,000 home battery installations in under nine months and prompting a budget expansion from $2.3 billion to $7.2 billion.
  • A tiered subsidy structure introduced in May 2026 reduced per-kilowatt-hour support for medium and large battery systems; for a 25kWh system, the subsidy fell by 33%, from approximately $8,400 to $5,604.
  • The available subsidy will continue to decrease every six months until the programme closes in 2030, meaning households that delay will receive progressively less support.
  • Helcro Solar director Luke Rose cautions that choosing a battery based primarily on rebate size rather than household usage profile is often the wrong approach, and that correctly sizing a system remains the critical factor.
  • Helcro Solar, a CEC-accredited retailer with 18 years of operation in Melbourne, provides fully itemised proposals modelled against actual usage data, with all installations carried out by A-grade electricians and followed by an independent post-installation inspection.

SOUTH MELBOURNE, Australia – 06 October 2026 – Helcro Solar, a CEC-accredited solar retailer operating in Melbourne for 18 years, says the pace of residential battery installations has changed more in the past 12 months than in the previous decade, and that the subsidy structure shift that took effect in May 2026 has changed the calculation households need to make before they proceed.

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which launched on 1 July 2025, reduced the upfront cost of an eligible battery installation by approximately 30%. The federal government’s own data and ABC reporting confirmed that more than 266,000 home batteries were installed in less than nine months following the program’s launch, with daily installation rates climbing from approximately 200 per day to over 1,500 per day. The program’s original $2.3 billion budget was expanded to $7.2 billion in December 2025 after demand outpaced all projections.

The tiered subsidy structure that took effect on 1 May 2026 changed the economics for larger systems materially. Before May 2026, the subsidy was calculated at a flat rate per kilowatt-hour of usable capacity up to 50kWh, which made larger batteries proportionally more attractive. Under the current tiered model, the per-kWh support for medium and large batteries is lower, while smaller systems retain closer to the original 30% discount. For a 25kWh system, the subsidy fell from approximately $8,400 to $5,604 from May 2026, a reduction of 33%. For a household that has not yet installed, the available support is lower than it was earlier in the year and will continue to step down every six months until the program closes in 2030.

“The program is still generous for a correctly sized system, but the window where larger batteries received an outsized subsidy has closed. What we are seeing now is households who held off during the initial rush coming back to us with more considered questions: what size actually suits our usage, what does the payback look like at current tariffs, and what happens when the next step-down comes in January. Those are the right questions, and the answers are different for every property. A battery decision made on rebate size alone rather than on usage profile is often the wrong decision,” said Luke Rose, Director of Helcro Solar.

Helcro Solar provides a fully itemised proposal before any work begins, modelling battery size against the property’s actual usage data and electricity tariff structure. The company’s battery storage installations cover systems from 5kWh to commercial scale, and are carried out by A-grade electricians under Helcro’s Victorian electrical contractor licence. Every installation includes an independent post-installation inspection.
