The Albanese Government is building a sustainable early education and care workforce by providing opportunities for educators to improve their skills and access training.
The $72.4 million workforce support program will ensure early childhood educators can take advantage of clear pathways for career advancement.
More than 80,000 early childhood educators will benefit over the life of the program, with a focus on regional and remote services and First Nations organisations.
Applications are now open for funding to backfill positions while early childhood educators, teachers and centre directors undertake professional development opportunities.
The program will also help existing educators upskill by providing financial support to help complete on-the-job teaching placements required by teacher education courses.
Early childhood educators can also apply for support to undertake a practicum exchange at a different service.
Minister for Early Childhood Education Dr Anne Aly said improving the capacity and capability of services is vital to delivering the quality early childhood education sector that families rely on.
“Shaped by engagement with the sector, the workforce package is another way the Albanese Government is recognising the professionalism of early childhood educators,” said Dr Aly.
“This is about ensuring workers in feminised industries, such as early childhood education and care, can seize opportunities to progress their careers.”
The Government is also increasing the number of people entering the early childhood education workforce through fee-free TAFE and additional university places, along with bursaries to support talented students enter the teaching profession.
This month the Albanese Government delivered more affordable early childhood education and care for around 1.2 million families right across Australia.
These landmark reforms are empowering families to make the choices that work best for them when it comes to early learning, workforce participation and further education – while also boosting the economic security of women.
Applications for the workforce support program are open until 15 July 2023. Program guidelines, including information on eligibility, are available on the Department of Education website.
