Help shape sensory playground honouring Airlie Montgomery

The community is invited to help create a lasting legacy for Airlie Montgomery by contributing to the design of a new sensory playground at Drexel Park in North Nowra.

The NSW Government has proudly funded $60,000 to Shoalhaven City Council for the project’s design, that will transform the existing park into a destination for inclusive and sensory play.

Mayor Patricia White said the project would create a fitting tribute to Airlie, a local six-year-old girl with autism who died tragically in 2025.

“Airlie’s passing touched the hearts of so many people across our community, and this project is a beautiful way to honour her memory,” Cr White said.

“This playground will be more than just a place to play. It will be a space where children and families can come together, make memories and feel a sense of belonging.

“By inviting the community to help shape the design, we’re ensuring this special place reflects the values of inclusion and kindness that have inspired this project,” she said.

Developed in partnership with the Airlie Fairy Foundation, the new play space will support children of all abilities, with features that encourage sensory exploration, accessibility and shared experiences.

Located between Goolagong Street and Garlin Close, Drexel Park is within walking distance of North Nowra Public School and Havenlee School, making it an ideal location for an inclusive community play space.

Once finalised, the detailed design will make the project shovel-ready and provide the documentation needed to pursue future funding for construction.

Residents, families, carers, educators and children are encouraged to share their ideas and help shape a space that reflects the needs of local families. Proposed play equipment and design features are available to view on Council’s Get Involved platform from 13 October to 10 November 2026.
