Helping Local Governments Manage Climate Risks

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Councils play a critical role on the frontline of managing climate impacts. They are increasingly handling the effects of flooding, coastal hazards, heatwaves and more.

The Australian Government is expanding our Climate Risk and Opportunity Management Program (CROMP) to better support local governments.

The new local government climate risk guide builds on existing CROMP tools and resources. It provides practical guidance to help councils identify, assess and manage climate risks and opportunities in a local government context.

Climate risk management refers to the readiness of organisations to prepare for and respond to:

  • the physical impacts of climate change
  • the risks and opportunities associated with the transition to net zero.

The guide was developed with the Australian Local Government Association and Victorian Climate Resilient Councils to ensure it reflects local government needs.

CROMP resources available across government include:

  • the risk management guide
  • learning and development modules
  • a digital tool
  • webinars
  • a dedicated local government community of practice.
