High flying Melville student lands aviation scholarship

  • A Melville Senior High School student is one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a professional pilot after he was awarded a prestigious $5,000 State Government scholarship.

    Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced Year 12 student Luke Yaxley is this year’s recipient of the Minister for Education’s Aviation Scholarship.

    Luke’s goals are to gain his private pilot licence and complete his Year 12 education.

    After graduating from secondary school, he plans to further his aviation training by completing a Diploma in Aviation.

    The Minister’s Aviation Scholarship is an annual prize awarded to a Year 12 student who is studying aviation at a public high school in Western Australia.

    The scholarship recognises a student who is motivated and committed towards aviation studies and a future career in the industry.

    Melville Senior High School is one of four public schools in Western Australia that offers an aviation specialist program to cater for students seeking a career in aviation, science, engineering or other related pursuits.

    As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

    “Luke displays strong integrity, leadership and determination, making him a deserving recipient of this scholarship.

    “I congratulate Luke on his dedication to his aviation studies and wish him all the best for his future career as a pilot.

    “It’s fantastic that WA public school students have the opportunity to develop real-world skills and gain a head start in reaching their career goals through approved specialist programs such as aviation.”
