The City of Hobart, together with TasPorts welcomes back cruising visitors to the City once again with the first ship of the season docking since early 2020.

With seven cruise ships set to make their way to Hobart before the end of the year, the potential boost to local businesses leading into the summer season is much needed.

Connected City Director Jacqui Allen from the City of Hobart said;

“Our businesses across Greater Hobart have done it tough over the last two years and while the city is getting ready to roll out some great summer campaigns to help continue to promote what Hobart as to offer, the influx of cruise visitors arriving directly to our city’s front door is a welcome addition”.

Ships arriving into Hobart will be greeted by a team of friendly and eager volunteers who, as part of the City of Hobart’s volunteer program, will be on hand to offer advice and a friendly welcome to cruise ship visitors during the summer cruise season.

The team of volunteers play an important role at the Cruise Ship Terminal and among other things are ready to;

– Promote the city by assisting visitors with general enquires (for example, directions on finding a specific attraction, how to purchase bus tickets).

– Referring visitors to the Travel Centre for bookings and sales.

“Volunteer programs like this are a fantastic way for visitors to get a taste of the local Hobart experience,” Ms Allen said.

Our volunteers enjoy getting to introduce visitors to the city while promoting all the services, sites and experiences our city has to offer.”

David Gentle, who has been part of the City Welcome Volunteer Program for more than four years, said he takes great pride in being able to showcase his city and his state to visitors. “I’m very excited about the cruise ships coming back,” Mr Gentle (pictured) said.

“It is the satisfaction in just knowing these people have come here looking for advice and you are able to point them in the right direction, so they have the best experience of Hobart and Tasmania.

“I fell in love with the city after I came here nearly 10 years ago and it is just nice to be able to share it with other people.”

The City Welcome Volunteer Program offers the opportunity for volunteers at various locations and events operated by the City of Hobart.

People from all backgrounds who love to help other people, who are looking for social engagement, and who want to participate in the operation of COVID-safe events and experiences take part in the program.

The program has been running for 12 years and has been such a success for the community and volunteers alike that the City has regularly increased the sites and events that are part of our volunteer calendar.
