Meet local organisations, clubs and community groups looking to recruit volunteers at the upcoming Hobsons Bay Volunteer Expo.

Hobsons Bay City Council and Altona-based community organisation Volunteer West will co-host the expo on Saturday 21 March at Logan Reserve in Altona between 1pm and 4pm.

Local residents are encouraged to come along on the day and learn about local volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to:

  • make a difference in the community
  • share skills and experience
  • gain new skills and experience
  • try something new
  • make new friends
  • show leadership and care within the community

The expo is a significant priority of the Hobsons Bay Volunteering Strategy which aims to foster a vibrant volunteering culture in the municipality, and create avenues for community groups to build their volunteering workforce.

As noted by Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Colleen Gates:

“Small organisations are an invisible force of action in our communities, which only survive through the dedication and hard work of volunteers. The agencies in our community range from helping our most vulnerable, promoting the arts, conserving the environment, preventing social isolation and preserving our heritage – to name just a few.

“In recent times, our country has seen how volunteers play a vital role during emergencies. They help foster community resilience, improve the health and wellbeing of communities, offer practical assistance and valuable support. Basically, we’d be lost without them.

“Volunteering gives people a chance to make a real and sustained impact on the local and wider community. During my Mayoral term, I look forward to shining a spotlight on our local volunteers to not only thank them for their service but to showcase their organisations and inspire others to join their ranks.

“We had a great response to the call out for stallholders – attracting the who’s who of our community – so come along to the expo and see how you can get involved.”
