Home energy kits put power in residents’ hands – Wollongong

To coincide with Global Climate Change Week, Wollongong City Libraries have unveiled a set of home energy efficiency kits to help residents save money and cut emissions.

The kits, available to book and borrow from the City’s seven library branches, each include a water flow measuring cup, an energy meter for appliances, and both traditional and non-contact thermometers.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said the kits were an exciting addition which will put the power in residents’ hands, literally.

“These handy kits will help households to understand their energy usage and identify areas for improvement, saving money on bills and reducing emissions in the process,” said Cr Bradbery.

“You don’t need to be handy or technical. The user manual will guide you through checking things like water flow and temperature.”

Alongside the kits, Wollongong City Council has compiled an Electrify Wollongong hub with support and resources to help residents make the switch to efficient, all-electric appliances like heat pump water systems and induction cooktops.

Cr Bradbery said making our homes more efficient and powering them with renewable energy are important actions we can all take to tackle climate change.

“When lots of people take small actions, the impacts are magnified across the city. That’s how we’ll reach a net zero Wollongong,” he said.

“Council is committed to leading the way and offering these kits to residents via our libraries is part of this commitment.”

Hiring instructions:

Customers can reserve the kit the same way they’d borrow a book. For starters, you’ll need to be a Wollongong City Libraries member (it’s free and easy to join!), then reserve it by searching ‘energy efficiency tool kit’ in the catalogue and ‘place reservation’. Kits can be borrowed for up to 2 weeks, then returned to your library.
