Homes for Queenslanders: Miles Government and Quilpie Shire Council partnership provides housing

  • Miles government infrastructure partnership supports council to deliver more Homes for Queenslanders
  • Three new homes delivered to accommodate council workers
  • Six freestanding residential units have commenced – part of a bigger housing development

The Miles Government has joined forces with Quilpie Shire Council through its infrastructure partnership with local government to provide more Homes for Queenslanders.

The council recently completed the construction of three houses which will become rental homes for council staff in an effort to help attract more workers to the region.

More than $1 million in funding was provided through the government’s Works for Queensland program to open up supply and build two homes in Quilpie and one in Eromanga.

Another $2.2 million has been provided through the government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program to help fund the construction of six townhouses for staff housing in Quilpie.

The properties will form part of a new townhouse development located close to the central business area and within walking distance to most facilities in Quilpie, including the hospital, schools and the local pool.

The project is stage one of a 30-unit development and will include green space for residents and the community.

The Quilpie Shire Council has also signed contracts for the delivery of nine transportable houses, the first of which is due for delivery this month.

These nine transportable houses are funded by council and will be delivered and completed in 2024.

Quotes attributable to Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon:

“To build more Homes for Queenslanders, we need everyone – all levels of government and industry – to work together.

“The Miles Government partnering with Quilpie to fund infrastructure is just one of the ways we’re working together to build more houses for Queenslanders.

“Infrastructure is vital to opening up more opportunities for housing and land supply, and we’re partnering with council to do that through Works for Queensland, $1.1 billion Recycling and Jobs Fund, $368 million in infrastructure funds and $76 million for local transport projects.

“Having dedicated homes for council employees helps council attract the workers they need, but also means they won’t have to compete with families in the region for other homes.”

Quotes attributed to Quilpie Mayor Stuart Mackenzie:

“State Government funding is critical in getting housing projects like these delivered, without it they would not happen.

“I’m pleased to be able to work with the State Government to deliver the much-needed housing to the region and thankful of that funding support.

“Without housing opportunities for the local workforce many would leave the area and the local economy would suffer as result.

“We look forward to working with the State Government to develop more housing opportunities going forward.”
