Horsham will host Tennis Victoria’s largest Regional Team Event in 2022 – The Inter-Regional Country Championships.
Eleven country regions across Victoria and over 220 players are expected to compete in both team and individual events.
The 66th annual tournament will be held across three days of competition from January 7 to 9 at the Horsham Lawn Tennis Club.
Tennis Victoria’s Chief Executive Officer, Adam Crameri is excited to bring a large-scale Tennis Victoria event to Horsham and the Wimmera region.
“We are very lucky to have Horsham Lawn Tennis Club as the home of the 66th Inter-Regional Country Championships,” Mr Crameri said.
“This Tennis Victoria event showcases the range of players we have in the tennis community, as it integrates women and men from under 12 to over 50 at one tournament, with a variety of formats played across three days, including junior and senior mixed doubles events.”
“It’s an event with a fantastic, friendly atmosphere that players look forward to coming back to compete in. It also gives players a chance to experience a different corner of Victoria each year and we are delighted to be hosted by Horsham in 2022!”
Horsham Rural City Council Mayor Robyn Gulline said the city was proud to be hosting the Championships.
“We welcome all players, their families and supporters to our regional city. I would encourage everyone while they’re here to take some time between matches to check out our beautiful river and our great cafes and restaurants. Good luck to all competitors,” Cr Gulline said.
Horsham Lawn Tennis Club was proud to host a large Victorian tennis event and President Hailey Yorke was equally as excited to bring people to the Wimmera Region.
“The Horsham Lawn Tennis Club (HLTC) is very excited to be hosting the 2022 Inter-regional country championships. We have been working tirelessly to prepare our facilities and organize a memorable and enjoyable event,” Ms Yorke said.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone in January.”
The event will be boosted by the attendance of the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy and Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, the Women’s and Men’s Australian Open trophies.
The trophies will be on site, giving players, spectators, and the local community a chance to see the silverware which will be, later in the month, held by the 2022 Australian Open Champions.
The event will be complemented by a social atmosphere on the Saturday night including food trucks and live music in Horsham.
Barwon Tennis Region will look to defend their title after winning the championship at Warrnambool in 2021.
