Hot air ballooning incident Melbourne victoria 18 december 2018

– 2 minor hot air balloon incidents occurred in Melbourne this morning, Monday 18 February 2019.
– Two hot air balloon flights have experienced minor incidents on landing, after a significant change in wind direction and wind speed resulted in the pilots landing safely with no injuries to any passengers or flight crew.
– The balloons were part of the Melbourne balloon formation which took off from Bundoora around dawn with their intended destination being Moorabbin airport.
– Approximately 1-1.25 hrs into their flights, both pilots report experiencing a significant change in wind direction and speed from N through NW to W.
– The pilots chose safe landing sites and both flights have been concluded without injury.
– One balloon landed in a large open reserve in Vermont. The experienced pilot then conducted a “drag landing” which is typical when there is significant ground wind speed. All passengers are routinely briefed pre flight and prior to landing regarding this prospect in the event of ground wind on landing. Balloon baskets are specifically designed for such landings.
– The other balloon landed without injury in a horticultural property which resulted in minor damage to a small tree.
– Both pilots have been flying for approximately 20 years and have outstanding safety records.
