Housing approvals continue to increase

Sarah Courtney,Minister for Building and Construction

In good news for housing supply and availability, Tasmania continues to lead the nation in the annual growth in residential building approvals, as the latest data from the ABS shows.

Tasmania was the only jurisdiction to experience growth in the total number of building approvals in January 2019, compared to January 2018, which grew a nation-leading 19.7 per cent, in trend terms.

This growth indicates that the Hodgman Liberal Government is continuing to work hard at supporting building industries so that more houses are being built to increase the housing supply for Tasmanians.

We are committed to supporting further investment and jobs in the sector, and continuing to cut red tape and streamline processes to make it easier, faster and cheaper to build in the State.

Strong growth was also experienced in the value of non-residential building approvals, which rose by 66.6 per cent over the same period.
