Housing Minister John Carey will lead a Western Australian contingent travelling to the United Kingdom to further investigatealternative construction and manufacturing methods.
There is significant interest from UK companies in housing manufacturing opportunities and delivering housing diversity in Australia.
The visit will provide opportunities to learn more about and see first-hand technologies that have been utilised throughout the UK for several years, delivering thousands of homes in large scale social and affordable housing projects, as well as urban regeneration developments.
The delegation will be touring urban renewal and residential projects in the UK, visiting manufacturing plants and meeting with Government officials, including the UK Minister for Housing and the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development of the Greater London Authority.
Tours of major redevelopment projects will provide insight into the innovations driven by global construction companies and inform the applicability of large-scale offsite manufacturing of housing in the Australian context. The experience of these medium and high-density developments in the UK could inform different approaches to combat current market constraints and boost housing supply across our State.
It will also highlight the direction taken in UK Government policy to support innovation in housing and deliver better outcomes either through new delivery models, design and construction methods or partnerships with community housing providers.
Importantly, the visit will also provide opportunities to discuss common opportunities and policy challenges to combat homelessness and learn from the experiences and successes of the UK Government working in partnership with non-Government agencies and the community.
The Cook Labor Government is investing a record $2.6 billion in housing and homelessness measures, including the delivery of 4,000 social homes.
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
“As Planning, Lands, Housing and Homelessness Minister my resolute focus remains we must do everything we can to accelerate the delivery of housing throughout Western Australia.
“This mission will seek to understand the applicability of alternative methods of construction and housing delivery to inform our future investment in the delivery of more social and affordable housing.
“As the Minister for Housing, I am particularly interested in understanding the opportunities for large-scale offsite housing manufacturing and whether that could be replicated in a Western Australian context, to rapidly boost housing supply.
“Our message is clear we’re using every lever we can to bolster the supply of housing and that includes learning from those who have, or are currently, walking a similar path.”
