A Katherine company has been selected to build 20 new homes on a new subdivision at Beswick.

NJ Homes was awarded the $11 million tender this week, with the first tranche worth $5.2 million.

The company will also build three new homes for government employees, and upgrade another.

The homes will be constructed on a recently completed 18-lot subdivision. Built by Territory contractor Yingwati, the subdivision represents a $3.2 million investment as part of the Territory Labor Government’s $432 million commitment to land servicing.

Heading north-east along the Central Arnhem Road and around the corner to the remote community of Gapuwiyak, an $18.2 million investment will yield 28 new homes.

Winning tenderer WTD Constructions will also upgrade and refurbish homes in the community that runs alongside Lake Evella.

The Territory Labor Government has already delivered 20 new homes in Gapuwiyak and has extended and improved five homes under its innovative Room to Breathe program.

The northeast Arnhem Land community has helped to plan the new homes, and will be involved in all aspects of construction.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelands Selena Uibo:

“The residents of Beswick and Gapuwiyak have been waiting a long time for this news. The new homes will go a long way towards alleviating overcrowding and improving liveability in the community.

“Works in both communities will be underway for the next three years to enable sustainable employment opportunities. To this end, the contractors plan to work with locals to construct the new homes and will offer jobs, skills development, and training opportunities.

“Our progressive remote housing program is not only about building and improving homes across the Territory. We’re building better communities that will be sustainable into the future.”
