How to stay safe in your home this winter

As we approach the winter months, it’s important to be alert of the potential dangers of using unauthorised heating products inside your home.

Over winter there is an increase in residential house fire-related incidents and fatalities – it’s important for all homes to be careful when using heaters, fireplaces, electric blankets and other heating products.

In NSW, gas heaters are banned products that can cause serious harm and potentially fatal incidents.

The devices are major fire hazards and do not meet Australian safety standards.

Gas heaters have the potential to malfunction and cause severe fire and damage. In NSW, homes have burst into flames due to the dangerous products.

Other heating products such as cabinet heaters have been banned in Australia for over a decade, but are still being sold to Australians via online auction websites.

Minister for Better Regulation Kevin Anderson warns the public to be alert of the dangers of using unauthorised indoor heaters.

“With the weather getting cooler, please don’t be tempted to buy a cabinet heater, and always check for safety certification prior to purchasing any heating device,” Mr Anderson said.

“There is real and serious risk that lives could be lost if consumers continue to buy and use them.”
