Hume City is a diverse and vibrant municipality, home to over 232,700 residents, a number expected to increase to 372,600 by 2041. As our municipality grows, Hume City Council will undertake a review of suburb boundaries to ensure the suburb size and design meets the needs of our current and future community.
Council will undertake this review in consultation with Geographic Names Victoria, under the Geographic Place Names Act 1998.
The Suburb Boundary Review Consultation will open on Monday 8 July 2019 and will close 5pm, Wednesday 7 August 2019.
Council is inviting your feedback on what changes, if any, you think should be made, including:
- What amendments could be made to suburb boundaries in Hume;
- What names might be appropriate for any newly-created suburbs; and
- Nominations to sit on a Locality Names Advisory Committee to shortlist names for any newly-created suburbs.
To encourage community feedback, Council has proposed some amended suburb boundaries in the high-growth areas of Mickleham, Craigieburn, Yuroke, Sunbury and Bulla that may benefit from change.
From Monday 8 July 2019, you can view Council’s proposed boundaries and map your own ideas online by going to the Your Say section of our website. In the meantime, you can view the Council report from the Minutes and Agenda of the latest Council meeting (24 June).
The review will be undertaken in stages:
- Stage one: general consultation. Any appropriate changes identified by the community and agreed to by Council in general consultation will be followed by:
- Stage two: formal consultation. Based on your feedback Council will recommend appropriate suburb boundary amendments, which may also include the creation of new suburbs, and will formally seek community feedback on these proposed amendments, and on proposed names for new suburbs.
- Stage three: Council will consider the feedback from formal consultation and make recommendations to Geographic Names Victoria, who make the final decision on whether to approve the proposed boundary amendments and proposed names for any new suburbs.
If you’d like to suggest a name for any newly-created suburbs, you may be interested to know that the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives. It’s an opportunity to continue raising awareness and taking further actions to improve preservation and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.
