The current bushfires situation has impacted upon the start of the school year for a number of families in the Huon Valley.

Based on advice from the Tasmanian Fire Service, and in the interests of student safety, a number of schools in the Huon Valley were shut but have been deemed safe to reopen.

The commencing date for students at the four schools currently closed are:

  • Dover District School, Wednesday 13th February
  • Geeveston Primary School, Thursday 14th February
  • Franklin Primary School, Monday 18th February
  • Glen Huon Primary School, Monday 18th February

Students will be able to attend their alternative school site up until their school recommences operation.

The Department of Education has worked closely with the TFS to ensure that it is safe to allow the return of staff and students to these school sites.

This plan has been established to minimise any additional disruption for affected communities and support their return to usual locations and activities as soon as possible.

Staff and contractors will begin to access these sites prior to opening to ensure they have time to set up appropriate learning spaces. Schools will be cleaned thoroughly with any maintenance work being completed prior to students returning.

The Geeveston Child and Family Centre and the Geeveston Library will also be re-opened on Tuesday 12 February.
